Best Marriage Advice. I've been married more than once and have learned the hard way how NOT to do marriage. Here's what I wish I'd known more than 65 years ago.

A strong marriage rests on three pillars: communication, partnership, and intentional love. Plus two bonuses: cultivate individual growth for each of you, and plan your future together

First, communicate with curiosity, not judgment. Treat every conversation as an opportunity to understand your spouse’s inner world. Listen actively—put aside devices, repeat back what you heard, and ask open‑ended questions. When disagreements arise, focus on the issue, not the person, and avoid “you‑always” or “you‑never” statements. A habit of regular check‑ins—weekly or even nightly—creates a safety net for concerns before they become crises. I'm not kidding...just do it.

Second, view the relationship as a true partnership. Share responsibilities equitably, whether they involve finances, household chores, parenting, or emotional labor. Discuss expectations early and revisit them as life changes. Celebrate each other’s strengths and compensate for weaknesses without resentment; remember that teamwork thrives when both partners feel valued and supported. Go back...read this section again.

Third, practice intentional love daily. Small gestures—leaving a note, preparing a favorite meal, or simply holding hands—reinforce affection far better than grand, infrequent displays. Express gratitude often; acknowledging what your spouse does well builds a positive feedback loop. Physical intimacy, too, is a vital language of connection—make time for touch, eye contact, and shared laughter. In a word, figure out what blesses your spouse and do it often and do it well with a joyful spirit.

Fourth, cultivate individual growth. A marriage flourishes when each partner pursues personal passions, friendships, and self‑care. Encourage one another’s ambitions, and celebrate achievements as joint victories. When both people feel fulfilled individually, they bring richer energy to the partnership. Learn each other's Love Languages and deliver on them often.

Finally, plan for the future together. Set shared goals—financial, travel, family, or spiritual—and create a roadmap. Regularly review progress and adjust as needed. Knowing you’re moving toward common dreams strengthens unity and gives purpose beyond day‑to‑day routines.

By communicating openly, sharing responsibility, nurturing daily affection, supporting personal growth, and aligning long‑term visions, couples build resilient, joyful marriages that endure life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Mine is in its 38th year and I wish I'd gotten it right sooner. Ours is not great because of some external force. It's GREAT because we make it great every day!!
