A Step-by-Step Guide

How Marriage Coaching Works

Marriage coaching is a structured process for couples who want to learn the skills of a thriving relationship — not just talk about what's wrong. Here is exactly what to expect when you work with us.

Step 1: The First Conversation

Every coaching engagement begins with a free 30-minute conversation. We listen to where your marriage is, what brought you here, and what you hope coaching could change. There is no script and no sales pitch. We end the call with a simple recommendation: coaching, retreat, mentoring, or a referral if therapy is the better fit.

Step 2: Education First

Most marriage problems are skill problems, not love problems. The first phase of coaching is education — we teach the framework couples need to understand what's actually happening in their marriage. This is not lectures; it is practical, hands-on learning rooted in 28+ years of coaching experience and a PhD in Educational Psychology.

Step 3: Coaching the Skills

Once the framework is in place, we move into one-on-one coaching. Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes, typically every other week, and we work on specific situations from the couple's actual life. Coaching is collaborative — we ask, you experiment, we adjust.

Step 4: Mentoring for the Long Run

New skills take 6 to 12 months to become automatic. Mentoring is the lighter-touch follow-up phase: monthly check-ins, accountability, and course correction when life throws curveballs. Many of our couples stay in mentoring for a full year after intensive coaching ends.

Format: In-Person or Virtual

Couples in the Dallas/Fort Worth area can meet in person. Couples anywhere else in the U.S. work with us virtually over video — the framework and skills translate directly. Many of our most successful coaching engagements have been entirely online.

How Long Does It Take?

A typical engagement runs 3 to 6 months of active coaching, followed by 6 to 12 months of mentoring. Couples in crisis often need a more intensive schedule for the first month. Premarital couples can complete the foundation in 6 to 8 sessions.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing depends on the scope of the engagement. We don't list rates publicly because every couple's situation is different — some need a single retreat, others a year of weekly work. We give a transparent quote during the first conversation, and we work with church partners and pastor families on reduced rates.
