Significance of the GIFTS - consider how you give this year!

The gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—hold deep spiritual and symbolic significance, representing key aspects of Jesus' identity and mission to earth.

Gold symbolizes Jesus' kingship, acknowledging him as the rightful King of Kings, a recognition that aligns with prophetic passages such as Daniel 7:13-14.

Frankincense, a costly incense used in worship, signifies Jesus' divinity and priestly role, reflecting his sacred nature and connection to God.

Myrrh, an embalming oil used in burial rites, foreshadows Jesus' suffering, death, and eventual resurrection, serving as a poignant symbol of his humanity and sacrificial mission.

These gifts were not merely valuable offerings but were chosen for their profound meaning, reflecting the Magi’s recognition of Jesus as a divine figure destined to fulfill roles as king, priest, and sacrifice.

The selection of these specific items was consistent with ancient customs of honoring royalty and deities, as seen in historical records of similar gift-giving practices. The Magi’s act of bringing these gifts was an expression of worship and reverence, demonstrating their devotion and acknowledgment of Jesus’ unique identity. Their journey and gift-giving also mark a pivotal moment in the Gospel narrative, signifying the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles and the universal scope of salvation.

Furthermore, the gifts are interpreted as a prophetic declaration of Jesus’ entire life and mission: his royal birth, his priestly service, and his ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s sins. This symbolism is echoed in the Christmas carol "We Three Kings," which summarizes the gifts as representing "King and God and sacrifice".

The Magi’s actions serve as a model for us as believers, inviting us to offer our own lives—symbolized by gold, frankincense, and myrrh—as acts of worship, prayer, and surrender to Christ.

God, help us to do that better today and all the days left for us, in Jesus' sacred name. Amen
