Revive. Renew. Restore!

LORD, God, my continuing review of Your seasons of blessing and punishment give me great concern and fear for the future of the way of life in which I have lived for more than 85 years. I read the amazing stories of the Welch revivals in the early days of the 20th century...than I experienced the impact of Billy Graham and others when I was a teenaged boy. Then we had a brief resurgence of faith after the tragic events of 9/11.

Father, I have read Your promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14, and I have claimed it as my own. But, it seems to me we have ignored the warning that follows. We have wanted healing without humility. We have wanted revival without repentance. We have wanted Your hand of favor without Your Lordship over our lives.

Forgive us for treating Your grace as a entitlement rather than a gift. Forgive us for seeking comfort in crisis without surrendering in quietness. Forgive us for polishing the brass while the world perishes outside our doors.

Send us another awakening—not of attendance, but of repentance. Not of emotion, but of transformation. Not of fear, but of faith.

Start with me. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Make me useful and usable in Your service. Let me not be one who prays for revival but refuses to be revived.

I do not deserve Your mercy. But I ask for it anyway—because You are God, and You are good, and You have done it before.

In the strong and matchless name of Jesus Christ, the Great Lover of our souls. Amen.

Verses for Today: "Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place.

For I have chosen this Temple and set it apart to be holy—a place where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.

As for you, if you faithfully follow me as David your father did, obeying all my commands, decrees, and regulations,

then I will establish the throne of your dynasty. For I made this covenant with your father, David, when I said, ‘One of your descendants will always rule over Israel.’

But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the decrees and commands I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, then I will uproot the people from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name. I will make it an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.

And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled. They will ask, ‘Why did the LORD do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?’

And the answer will be, ‘Because his people abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why he has brought all these disasters on them.’” (2 Chronicles 7:14-22)

Food for Thought:

  1. Which of the three historical movements (Welsh Revival, Graham era, 9/11) do you most relate to, and why?

  2. Have you ever experienced a "9/11 moment"—turning to God in crisis but fading once the crisis passed?

  3. What does genuine repentance look like in your life right now? What specifically needs to change?

  4. How does reading 2 Chronicles 7:19-22 alongside verse 14 change your understanding of God's promise?

  5. What is one concrete step you can take this week to move from comfort-seeking to surrender?
